Substitution: Reacting OH- ions with an Alkyl Halide
If the base is dilute and the temperature isn't too high (gentle conditions) then there will be substitution of the Cl or Br (or I) with OH.
This will happen via a SN2 mechanism for primary alkyl halides; via a SN1 mechanism for tertiary alkyl halides. If the alkyl halide is secondary it will happen by both mechanisms.
